I am not a farmer, but if I were, I would nominate our district for a Monsanto Grow Rural Education Fund Grant.  The more Farmers in our area that nominate our school, the better (this shows community support for our school).  Please pass this link along and see if we can help our school district win much needed grant money from Monsanto for Science and Math education programming.

Bullying in our schools

The other day a voter asked me what I would do to stop the bullying in our schools.  I think that this article has really great advice for parents who are concerned about bullying in their child’s school:

http://www.greatschools.org/parenting/bullying/slideshows/3898-how_to_stop_bullying_at_your_school.gs?page=1#slide

Bullying can not be ignored in our schools.  It can not be tolerated.  It is not a right of passage for our youth.  It is a serious problem and is not included in safe and caring learning environment for our children.

I just clicked through our district website, and did not find an anti-bullying resources for parents, and did not see a statement on bullying on the website or in the official Handbook that I was given when the boys registered for school.  I would like to see these crafted, published and implemented so parents and students know that bullying is not tolerated in our schools.

So what would I do as a school board member to stop bullying in our schools?

My approach would be to do a district wide assessment on the state of bullying in our schools.  I would create a committee to look at the data involved in incidences of bullying.  I would contact The University of Illinois Department of Education, and specifically a former Professor that I have worked with, who is an expert on the subject of bullying in the schools, and who has developed anti-bullying programs for schools, and has worked with schools implementing programs.  With her advice, we would develop our own program or choose a data-driven program, which we would implement at the district level, and the district policy on bullying would be known to all parents sending their children to our schools.

Speaking of Teacher Appreciation…

The Heritage PTC is having a meeting on Monday, April 4th from 7-8pm at the Homer Elementary and Jr. High.  Two items on the agenda are Teacher Appreciation Week, and Inflatables Day.  The PTC is a great way for parents to get involved in our school, and if you have any questions, please contact me!  I try to go to every meeting, even if I have to bring all the littles with me (although for the sake of everyone at the meeting- I hope they will not be joining us on the 4th!)

Ice Cream Day is Friday, April 1st.  The PTC will hand out ice cream to students after lunch, as a “job well done” on their recent high-stakes state mandated testing.  It is really fun to hand the treats out to the students, and I was lucky to get to volunteer to do this last year.  While I am not of fan of giving children sugar (says the lady to retails soda in her children’s store) it is a chance to add a little something extra to the school day, and to let the students know that the parents really appreciate their hard work and effort. Contact me if you would like more details about how you can help with Ice Cream Day.  I will forward you on to the co-presidents of our PTC.

I will save how I feel about the state standardized testing for another post.

In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful day!

The Best Teacher Ever

The other night Owen chose Mercer Mayer’s The Best Teacher Ever as his bedtime book.  If you are not familiar with the story, Teacher Appreciation day is coming up at Little Critter’s school, and Little Critter can’t find just the right present to give to Miss Kitty, who is the Best Teacher Ever.  After a few mishaps, Little Critter ends up drawing Miss Kitty a picture, and she proudly displays it on the classroom bulletin board.

This story resonated with Owen, who loves his classroom teacher.  As parents, we are so thankful that he has a teacher who teaches the Whole Child that makes Owen who he is.  She has created a community in her classroom that allows our son to grow to love learning.  And that is the best gift she could give Owen.  In his eyes, she is the Best Teacher Ever, and during his first year in school, we can’t ask for any more than that!
